Cancelling your road tax

If you would like to cancel your road tax and get a refund you can do so by phoning the number above. When you phone this number you will need to give the reason as to why you’re cancelling your road tax, such as if you have sold or transferred the vehicle to someone else, if the vehicle has been written off by the insurance company, if it has been scrapped, exported out of the UK or registered as exempt from vehicle tax.

If you are cancelling your road tax you will get a refund on any full months of remaining tax.

Stolen car

If your car is stolen and you want a road tax refund you can phone the number above. Here they will explain the process that needs to be taken by you to ensure that you get your road tax refund on your stole vehicle.

If your vehicle had a personalised registration number that you want to keep, you will also need to phone the number above to ensure that you can still have it and get a refund on the previous vehicle’s road tax too.

Direct debit payments

You can set up direct debit payments for your road tax online and at a Post Office, but if you would like to cancel these direct debit payments you can phone the number above.

If you cancel your Direct Debit road tax payment just before a monthly payment is due, there is still a chance that money can be taken from your account. If you encounter this problem phone the number above to get this rectified and ensure your money is refunded into your account.

By paying through direct debit, you will incur a 5% surcharge if you choose to pay monthly or every six months, you cannot get this refunded when you cancel your direct debit payment.

If you would like to make a complaint about your personal process of your road tax refund then you can phone the number above. When you phone this number they will log your complaint and do their best to ensure you are satisfied with the outcome.

Getting your Road Tax Refund

Your road tax refund will come via a cheque, automatically. If you haven’t received your refund cheque after six weeks call the number above. Phoning this number will allow you to get an update on your refund process and find out whether or not the refund has been delayed for any reason.

If you receive your cheque, but the details are wrong on it, you can also phone this number to have it rectified and a new cheque sent to you.

Statutory Off Road Notification

Phone the number above to register your vehicle as off the road and ensure you get your road tax refund. Even if you are keeping the car, but not planning to use it, you can process a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to get a refund on any full months of remaining tax. You can choose to start this immediately or on the first day of the next month.
