Ofsted stands for “Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills”. This non-ministerial government department inspects and regulates services providing education and care for children and learners. Ofsted remains impartial and reports directly to Parliament.

Over 1,500 Ofsted Inspectors carry out inspections of providers of education and skills across 8 regions. These are the North West, North East Yorkshire and Humber, East of England, East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, and London.

Ofsted publishes the results of its inspections online for anyone to access. These evaluations express Ofsted’s expectations and findings. The purpose of these reports is to make sure educational institutions and childcare agencies meet acceptable standards.

Register as a Childminder

If you are paid to look after children under 8 years old for more than 2 hours a day, then you must register with Ofsted. In England, you must apply to the Early Years Register or the Childcare Register, or both. You could receive a large fine or prison sentence if you provide daycare services without registering. Call 0844 248 1748 to find out what to do and how much it costs.

Register as a Child Social Care Provider

Social care services must register with Ofsted before they can operate. This includes children’s homes, adoption and fostering agencies, residential family schemes, and residential holiday schemes for disabled children. Call 0844 248 1751 for guidance on the steps to apply, such as DBS checks, fees, an inspection visit to the service’s premises, and your certificate of registration.

Recruitment

Aside from inspectors, Ofsted employees can work in editing, IT, data analysis, accounts, policies, and administration. Ofsted has offices in Manchester, London, Bristol, Nottingham, Birmingham, York, and Cambridge – but you can also work from home. Call 0844 248 1752 to find out how to become an inspector or which qualifications you need to have to work for Ofsted in any role.

Media Enquiries

Members of the media can contact Ofsted by calling 0844 248 1753. Ofsted’s Press Office will handle all queries for journalistic purposes. These could be enquiries about Ofsted reports, requests for interviews, or requests for photographs. Call this number to ask for the duty press officer’s out-of-hours contact details. You should only use this helpline if you work in the press.

Other Ways to Contact Ofsted

You might have a Government Gateway account from using other gov.uk services, such as HMRC or the DVLA. Using your Government Gateway ID, you can log into the Ofsted Online portal. This service helps you to communicate electronically with Ofsted about registration applications, online payments, and social care, among other things.

It may be a much slower contact method, but you can also write a letter to Ofsted at their head office. Put formal complaints and non-urgent enquiries in writing and send them in the post.
