Christmas is an exciting time of the year but if you claim benefits it can also be one of the most worrying times of the year. If you’re worried that you won’t be able to claim your benefits before Christmas or you would like to know when you can claim your benefits over the Christmas period – you can find the dates you should receive your benefits below.
If you are due to receive your tax credit payment on the 25th, 26th or 27th of December you will receive your payments on the 22nd of December. For payments due on the 1st or 2nd of January you will receive your payments on the 29th of December. If you live in England, Scotland or Wales and your payment is due on the 28th December you will be paid on the 27th December or if your payment is due on the 3rd of Jan and you live in England, Scotland or Wales your payments should be received on the 2nd.
If you’re due to receive your child benefit payment on the 25th December you will receive your payment on the 21st, if you’re due a payment on the 26th December you should receive the payment on the 22nd and if you are due the payment on the 1st of January you will receive the payment on the 29th December.
For payments due on the 25th/26th/27th of December your payments will be made on the 22nd of December. Payments due on the 28th will be paid on the 27th. for 1st and 2nd of January payments they will be received on the 29th of December and lastly, payments due on the 3rd of January should be received on the 2nd or possibly earlier, this has not been confirmed yet – you can check your payment dates by calling 0843 596 3659.
All Other Benefits
Over the Christmas bank holiday period, if you are due a payment on the 25th, 26th or 27th of December you should receive your payment on the 22nd. For any other dates that you are unsure about you can call HMRC on 0844 248 1687 to check your benefit payment dates.
Other Payments Available in Winter
The Christmas bonus is a tax-free £10 payment that is made usually on the first-week of December to people who are on certain benefits. You do not need to claim this bonus you should be paid automatically and you must be on the list of certain benefits that are eligible. If you know you should have received this payment but you did not check the HMRC website or call the helpline on 0844 248 1687.
Cold Weather Payment
The cold weather payment is given to people on certain benefits when the weather has been recorded as or predicted to be 0°C or below for a period of 7 consecutive days. This scheme runs from November 1st to March 31st and you will receive £25 for each 7 day period.
Winter Fuel Payment
You could receive £100-£300 towards your heating bills if you were born on or before the 1st of August 1953. You will receive this payment automatically if eligible and if you get state pension or other social security benefits (not including housing benefits, council tax reduction, child benefits or universal credit). The payment should be received by you in November or December and the latest you should receive this payment is the 15th of January. If you are eligible but have not received this payment you have until the 31st of March to claim for the money.
